      Wednesday 8/26 ~ Teacher Colors

*If you tested a teacher, tell me ASAP!
*BTW - We will be interrupted today to take our pictures!

      True Colors Part 2
EQ: How do your colors interact with those of your teachers and classmates?

      • Do you think it is more beneficial to have a teacher whose colors match yours or whose colors balance yours?
The second part of this concept is that we can think about the people we are learning with in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. If we know each other better, then we can value them and communicate better. Even teachers are part of that consideration.
TC Part 2: click here to view this power point.

      • Notes: Take notes on how your colors might interact with what you guess are your most challenging teacher's colors. How will you survive this year?
*Please register for turnitin.com today! Your course codes are in the "Course Info" tab.

HW: True Colors essay due on block day (hard copy and on turnitin.com).
      • Essay Described: Write a 1-2 page narrative essay (that's an essay based on stories from your life!) to describe a real example or two of how your personality type is true in your own life and how it interacts with others. Along with your story, please include some reflection of how your personality traits can be a strength or weakness when it comes to school. How will you succeed in learning from/with teachers and students who are so different from you? Due Friday 8/28 as a hard copyClick here to view the rubric.

      Tuesday 8/25 ~ My Sister's Keeper Quiz

      Prefixes
We will be learning MANY word parts this year, including prefixes, roots and suffixes. This is a killer way to prepare for the SAT and life. If you know that base of a word, you can usually use the context to figure it out. We will learn a chunk of the list that is shared by all grade levels. Check it our and review last year's portion by using the link on the left side of the blog.

EC Opportunity: Does anyone want to lead this activity all week?

In our journals, you will need to have a "Word Parts" section. For each prefix, root, or suffix, please record the word part, the definition and at least three words that use it.
      For example:

EQ: Do your example words use the word part as a prefix? Does it carry the same meaning in the word?
      • dominus - lord - dominant, dominion, dominate
      • dynasthai - be able - Now it's your turn to make them up!

      My Sister's Keeper ~ Check in #6

Sophomores! Stop floating around in space and get that summer reading finished!

"It's more like we're astronauts, each wearing a separate helmet, each sustained by our own source of air." This quote comes from Anna, as she and her parents sit in silence in the hospital cafeteria. Besides being a powerful use of imagery, this observation shows Anna to be perhaps one of the wisest, most perceptive characters in the novel. What do you think she meant by her description of her family?

      My Sister's Keeper ~ Check in #5

Ok sophomores, hopefully My Sister's Keeper has lit some kind of fire in you!

You have probably noticed that fire plays quite a large role in the novel. When considering Brian and Jesse and their relationships to "fire", what do you think "fire" represents to each of these characters? If you use a literary device or two to prove your analysis, well, that might just fire me up enough to reward you on Monday. Dig deep and wow me with your thoughts.

      My Sister's Keeper ~ Check in #4

      Hey sophomores!

Oh my gosh! Your time is ticking! Monday is the big day and you should be nearing the end of My Sister's Keeper.

I'm wondering if you noticed that Sara’s chapters take place almost entirely in the past. What is the significance of this? Why do you think Picoult chose to write Sara's chapters in this way?

      Saturday, August 8

My Sister's Keeper ~ Check in #3 ~ Who is the foil character?

      Hey students!

Thanks for posting. It will come in handy later! For now, feel free to continue posting to my questions or responding to what other students have said as well.

For this post, I wonder who you think might be Anna's foil character. A foil character is usually another character that reveals the qualities of the protagonist (Anna) by contrast. The term comes from an old practice in jewelry making; foil was always placed behind a precious gem to make it reflect and shine brighter. Which character do you believe Jodi Picoult is using to reveal more depth in Anna?

My Sister's Keeper - Check in #2 Family Roles

      Hey students!
I found this blurb about family roles in our novel. Check out the insights and post what you think. Penny for your thoughts?

The members of the Fitzgerald family each exemplify a role or “place” in their family structure. For example, it’s easy to see that Jesse is troubled, Anna is a martyr and Brian, the Dad, a peacekeeper. Roles exist in every family unit. Explore the reasons and depths of these roles in the following questions, as well the impact of these roles on others.

      • What role does Kate play in the family? How do you think she handles her “place” in the family?
      • Anna feels her only role is to be a donor for Kate. Do other members of the family feel Anna fulfills any other roles? If so, describe them.
      • In the book, Jesse’s character is expanded upon in greater depth and detail than in the movie. He engages in destructive behavior towards himself and his environment, including smoking, drinking and setting fires. He also physically lives a separate life from the rest of the family in a room over the garage. Despite all of this, he demonstrates a clear love and loyalty for both of his sisters. Why do you think this is so?
      • Why do you think Jesse is troubled, and what factors contribute to his behavior?
      • Describe Sara. Other than being the mother, what role(s) does she play in the family and situation?
      • Discuss the subjectivity of Sara as a mother in contrast to being the attorney in court defending one daughter against the other.
      • Brian works to hold the family together and be understanding of the needs and desires of the children, more so than his own. Compare and contrast his profession as a firefighter with his peacekeeping role in the family.
      • Do you think people have a choice in what their role or “place” is in a family? Why or why not? Do you play a role in your family? If so, what is it?

      My Sister's Keeper - Check in #1

      Hello new sophomores!

Welcome to our class blog. I (Mrs. West) hope you're enjoying the summer reading. Please join he conversation and add your own questions as we post along!

      For starters....
      1) In Chapter 1, Anna explains specifically how and why she was conceived to help her sister. Do you think her parents were right to tell her all of these details? Would it have been better if they had kept that quiet and allowed Anna the chance to choose to help her sister at an older age?

      2) How can you describe Anna's character? What can you infer about her "between the lines"?

      3) If Anna's parents had given her the choice all along, do you think she would have helped Kate willingly for so long?

      Summer Reading

Welcome to English 2 and English 2 Honors!

In order to be successful at the beginning of the year, you will need to do the following:

      1. Check the blog and post! Mrs. West will be hosting a blog conversation about our summer reading, so please join! It may benefit you later in unexpected ways. J
      2. Buy a hardcopy of My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult.  Why a hardcopy? You will need a real paper book in order to mark up, take notes and meditate as you read this inspiring novel that will lead you to deep personal insight.
      1. Highlight and mark your text. As you read, you should be thinking about and jotting down notes that answer the questions, “Would I have done the same in this situation?” and “What is motivating each character in how they deal with the situations life had sent their way?” Here are a few tools…
      ·        Make notes about writing style; in this case Picoult changes her style to match the personality of each character. Take notes about style to figure out how she does this.
      ·        Draw a Key next to any text that seems key to the theme or character development.
      ·        Leave question marks or emoticons in the margin to remind you of your thoughts without writing too many words.
      ·        Highlight key passages.
      ·        Draw pictures in the margins to remind you of the subject of a page, paragraph or chapter.
      ·        Use Venn Diagrams to compare characters.
      ·        Make brief notes about your own experiences if a passage reminds you of something from your life or something else that helps you to understand more depth in the passage (many books make references to songs, movies, or other writings, etc…).
      ·        Every time you see a word you don’t know, look it up and write the definition near it. You could even create a glossary in the back of the book. New vocab is key in crafting a good SAT essay.

      4. Watch the movie. That’s right, there’s a movie! You should watch it because we won’t get time to watch the whole thing in class. However, the book is drastically different from the movie. You will need to be prepared to discuss those differences with the class.

Why should I read and take notes? You should read and take notes so that you can be part of the class discussion at the beginning of our time together in class. There is nothing worse than being asked for your input and not having anything to contribute because you did not bother to read. Also, there will be a test within the first week of school. You don’t want to start off the year with a sad grade. Finally, you want to set good habits that will carry through the year. Your instructors have carefully chosen texts that are not only interesting and insightful, but carry themes that will go hand in hand through our final unit at the end of the year.

      ·        Above all else, relax. This novel is entertaining and interesting. Enjoy your summer with family and friends. Perhaps some of what you read in My Sister’s Keeper will lend itself to some great discussion with family members.
