Tuesday 5/10 ~ Practice Debate

CLASS DEBATE ~ We will practice our debate structure and FLOW notes using one of the topics below. Let's choose one and take five minutes to form your "opening speeches" with your team. Organize them by THEMESS please!

EQ: Did your FLOW catch their dropped arguments? 
  • Should women be allowed in combat?
  • Should animal testing be banned?
  • Should Monte Vista stop having a dress code?
  • Should it be illegal for kids under the age of 5 to play video games?
  • Should violent video games be banned?
  • Is Twitter really better than Instagram? (or Facebook, etc...)
  • Do school uniforms help the learning environment? 
  • Should cigarettes really be illegal for adults under 21? 
*Check for understanding: Did the team continue to address each of the main THEMESS throughout the debate? How did you do with your flow notes?

Block Day, May 5&6 ~ EQ: How will I be graded during the debate?

DEBATES
  • Go over the grading rubric for debates
  • Peer-Editing of Opening/Closing Statements ~ TWO Peer-edits please!
    • Rate each of the 3 areas of evidence from 1-5 (5=strong)
    • Circle anything that needs clarification.
    • Write down any arguments not mentioned.
    • Put a box around anything that has a logical fallacy.
    • Does the writer use Ethos, Logos and Pathos? Make a note of how the writer could incorporate a more powerful form of persuasion.
  • Take time to make corrections.
  • This speech is due on Monday!
  • Last 10 minutes: Impromptus!

HOMEWORK
  • Perfect your opening/closing statement. Turn in a printed, final-draft version on Monday (5/9).

  • Check Points: 1-Make sure you have a balance of evidence (for example, a debate that is based completely on pathos won't win. Make sure your evidence is PLENTIFUL and includes ethos, logos and pathos). 2-What questions do you think the opponents will ask you about....get your rebuttals ready!
