Monday, March 6 ~ Ethos Logos Pathos Preview

GRAMMAR
Warm-up:  Take this little quiz on Accept/Except & Affect/Effect

PERSUASION
EQ: What are rhetorical devices? Why are we learning persuasion today?
  • Ethos- think of being persuaded by someone's moral credibility. Wow! he's a good person! or
This must be true because she's an expert. OR That must be a lie, because he's slime.
  • Pathos- think of being persuaded by emotion. Stop thinking and start feeling!
  • Logos- think of being persuaded by reason. Bring on the graphs, charts and stats!
Has to be true. Look at all of these facts.
  • If we have time, test yourself on E, L & P by untangling the mixed up examples here

NOTE: Tomorrow, we will analyze the speeches by Brutus and Marc Antony to see which one is more rhetorically powerful. On block day, we will write one last ICE to analyze one of those texts.

HW: Consider your conversations over the weekend, record at least one real example for each type of persuasion.

example: For logos ~ my son asked me for a cookie and said it was only fair because his sister had one and he had cleaned up his room. (Great logic, but his room was still messy and the other part was a total lie :) They learn early folks.
