  • Although Peekay was only six, he certainly had enough communication skills to act independently from most adults. His comments to Dee and Dum display his power to advocate for himself: I am too old to be washed by silly girls, I said indignantly. Put on the water and I will bathe myself. (Courtenay, 147) Clearly, his attitude matches his ability to take care of himself. His independence is further exemplified in the way he addresses Mother. His rebellion against the absence of Nanny is clear and fearless. He says I stood looking directly at my mother. The Lord is a shithead! (Courtenay, 151) Although he may not understand the weight of his words, he does prove to be powerfully independent.
